excerpt of an interpretation of the Installation the Clearing by Virginia Folkestad written by William Biety

The Clearing is rich in dichotomies, mysteries and challenges. It invites the voyeur as well as the participant to stand peeping in at the corner, watching the activity within this severely delineated space, watching the negotiations of those who enter, their exuberance, tentativeness, wonder and pain, is to experience it once removed.  Beyond that are the people in the larger gallery who see only the backsides of the outsiders and begin the process of wondering what they see within, rather like watching a crowd on a corner and wondering what makes them congregate…the attraction is strong. The Clearing could be a stand in for consciousness with its inner elements and outward manifestations, its physical boundaries and channels of transmission, the slightly prickly yet appealing experience of it.  Most of all for the rich, deep layering of information, symbol and shadows.  This is a space to enter but may seem forbidding.  The price of admission is awareness
